Spine Videos | September 20, 2023

In this video, Dr. Schnetzer discusses disc replacement, a common procedure performed at OrthoGeorgia. He shares how one determines if a disc replacement is needed, what the procedure entails, and what recovery may look like. Check out the video above or the transcription below to learn more!

What is the Purpose of Disc Replacement?

My name is Dr. Ryan Schnetzer. I’m an orthopedic spine surgeon here at OrthoGeorgia, and today we’re going to talk about disc replacement. So, disc replacements have become a more common surgery in the neck, especially over the last five to ten years. These are done to address multiple pathologies, primarily when somebody has a herniated disc in their neck that is pinching the nerves going down their arm. This could be leading to pain or weakness going from their neck down into their arms.

Disc Replacement vs. Spinal Fusion

The disc replacement is done instead of a fusion. So, instead of doing a fusion and fusing the bones together where they don’t have any more motion, we’re able to do a disc replacement where we put basically a plastic spacer with metal instead of where the disc was to allow motion through that area to help protect the levels above and below the area.

Cervical Disc Replacement

For a cervical disc replacement, we do it the same way that we would if we were doing a cervical fusion. We come in from the front of the neck, usually a small incision on the left side. We’re able to come in directly in the front; we’re able to access the disc and take out the disc going from the front. This allows us access to the back along where the nerve roots are. We’re able to get the pressure off of the nerve roots that way; and then, instead of putting a cage and fusing this area, we’re able to put a spacer in there that allows mobility so that the spine can still move in its normal parameters.

What is Recovery from Disc Replacement Like?

Recovery takes about six weeks to three months, but you are out of bed and walking around immediately after surgery. So, if you’re having any symptoms of pain starting in your neck and radiating down your arm or any weakness in your arm, give us a call at OrthoGeorgia.
