OrthoGeorgia provides Orthobiologic options for patients
This field is still evolving and we cannot guarantee success with any therapy. Building on the human body’s inherent ability to repair and heal itself, orthobiologic products are substances naturally found in the body. These non-invasive or minimally invasive treatment options can help patients speed the healing process and treat symptoms from tendon or ligament injury, tendonitis, arthritis or muscle strains without surgery. Medical research has made great strides in the last decade and there are several different options to choose from.
OrthoGeorgia feels strongly these treatments are investigational and need to be delivered with intensive patient education and informed consent. Since insurance carriers still consider these therapies as experimental, they will not cover the cost. Patients will be expected to cover the cost out of pocket. Our fee is designed to cover our costs.
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Procedures
A popular option is Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP therapy. PRP Therapy utilizes a patient’s own blood to stimulate healing of damaged soft tissue, bone or cartilage in the body. This type of orthobiologics speeds up the healing process and helps treat symptoms in the affected area. PRP is most commonly used to treat patients with osteoarthritis in the shoulder, hip, or knee and can be used for tendon or ligament injuries, tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis and muscle strains. More conservative methods of treatment are typically attempted first, such as rest, medication, and physical therapy; but if those fail, PRP is often a good option.
Stem Cell Treatments
Over the last decade, stem cell therapy is increasing in popularity. It promotes the reparative response of disease, dysfunctional or injured tissue using stem cells or their derivatives. As with other forms of orthobiologics, stem cell treatment can offer great promise in healing injured soft tissues without having surgery.
