Check out a discussion with OrthoGeorgia total joint specialist Dr. Zaneb Yaseen about the Direct Anterior Approach to Hip Replacement. Watch the video or read the transcription below to learn more about the different approaches to hip replacement and the benefits of the direct anterior approach.
I am Dr. Zaneb Yaseen. I work for OrthoGeorgia. I’m a sports medicine physician. I want to talk about the direct anterior approach to the hip. Hip arthritis and hip pain are very common, especially as we get older. People often complain of a deep, achy pain (occasionally it’s sharp and stabbing), difficulty sitting for long periods of time, and issues getting up from a chair or walking. When all the conservative approaches fail and you’re ready for surgery, we talk about different approaches to the hip.
There are multiple approaches – the most common ones performed are direct anterior or posterior (the back of the hip). I prefer the direct anterior approach. Basically what I do is I make a small incision in front of the hip and I go around the muscle so you’re not taking tendons down, which means the recovery time can be a little bit shorter in the short run. Long-term outcomes are very similar at around 2 years.
There’s a slightly lower dislocation rate where the hip comes out of the socket with a direct anterior approach. Many patients find that it’s a little bit easier to recover from. You can go home the same day. You’re walking right away with both procedures really, but it can bring you a good quality of life with a relatively short recovery time. Even by two weeks post-surgery, many people are mobilizing better than they were before surgery. So if you’re having any hip pain or discomfort, please consider calling OrthoGeorgia. We’re happy to take care of you.
