Editor’s note: This is the second in a four-part series highlighting the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce’s finalists for 2024 Small Business of the Year. The winner will be announced Saturday, June 15, at the Chamber Awards Gala.

OrthoGeorgia is a name that has been present in this region for over six decades now, helping mend Central Georgians from normal wear and tear on the body as well as injuries sustained on the athletic field and at the workplace.

The Macon-based orthopaedic specialist added a Milledgeville office in 2016, and that office is for the first time up for the Small Business of the Year award presented annually by the local Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s a great honor just to be nominated and be recognized for the impact we’ve had on the community,” OrthoGeorgia orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Matthew Toth said. “We’re really proud and grateful to serve the Milledgeville community and help it grow from a health aspect. It’s been a pleasure being here.”

OrthoGeorgia Milledgeville provides comprehensive orthopaedic care including physicians visits, casting, bracing, imaging and physical therapy. Patients are seen inside the office located in the Kroger shopping center and surgeries, when needed, are done, either in Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin Hospital or in Macon. Toth says he isn’t quick to send his patients under the knife, though. Non-operative treatment is usually the doctor’s first course of action.

“More often than not, patients need more conservative care to start,” he said. “My approach is to not necessarily jump into surgery unless it’s absolutely necessary. That’s kind of a last resort in terms of taking care of things.”

A Cleveland, Ohio native, Dr. Toth has been at OrthoGeorgia’s Milledgeville office since 2020. He’s there full-time offering general orthopaedic and sports medicine care and is aided by a staff that sees patients experiencing aches in the body’s many joints — shoulders, hips, knees and ankles — in addition to conditions of the hands and spine.

The shoulder is an area of expertise for Toth, who completed a fellowship at the Andrews Institute in Florida under the direction of world-renowned Dr. James Andrews, a name known throughout the sports world for his work with athletes. Toth’s earlier education was completed at Georgetown University, where he obtained both his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees. He went on to complete an orthopaedic surgery residency at Orlando Regional Medical Center. While there, he was assistant team physician for the Atlanta Braves, Washington Nationals and several other sports teams.

A former athlete himself, Toth still likes to stay close to the field. He can often be seen on the sidelines at John Milledge Academy and Georgia Military College junior college football games tending to players who go down with injuries. But the ability to be close to sports is not the only reason he went into the orthopaedic field.

“I chose orthopaedics because I like things that are more tangible and visible,” he said. “I like working with my hands and always enjoyed building things with my grandpa in his workshop. Orthopaedics is kind of like carpentry of the body, so to speak.”

The job isn’t just putting broken bones and ligaments back together through therapy and surgery. There are other aspects in play like pain management, mental health and determining when it is safe to get back onto the field or into the workplace.

“We want patients to come away saying they’ve received comprehensive, compassionate orthopaedic care,” Toth said. “My goal is to get people back to doing what they want to do.”
