Cervical Radiculopathy Pain: What Everyone Should Know

Arm pain isn’t always caused by a shoulder or elbow injury. In many workplace injury cases, the true source is the neck. Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a nerve in the cervical spine (neck) becomes irritated or compressed, sending pain, numbness, or weakness down the arm. Understanding this condition is critical for timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and safe return-to-work planning.

What Is Cervical Radiculopathy?

The cervical spine contains seven (7) vertebrae with nerves that branch out to the shoulders, arms, and hands. When one of these nerves is compressed—often by a herniated disc, bone spur, or degenerative changes—it can disrupt nerve signals. The result is pain that radiates beyond the neck into the arm, sometimes reaching down to the fingers.

Common Workplace Causes of Cervical Radiculopathy

Cervical radiculopathy may develop suddenly or gradually due to:

  • Repetitive overhead work
  • Heavy lifting or forceful pulling
  • Poor workstation ergonomics
  • Prolonged driving or equipment operation
  • Acute trauma, such as a fall or motor vehicle accident

Even jobs that appear “low impact” can contribute if posture and movement patterns place ongoing stress on the neck.

Symptoms to Watch For

Symptoms vary depending on which nerve is affected, but they often include:

  • Sharp, burning, or aching pain traveling from the neck into the arm
  • Numbness or tingling in the shoulder, arm, or hand
  • Muscle weakness or reduced grip strength
  • Pain that worsens with certain neck movements

Because symptoms can mimic shoulder or carpal tunnel injuries, cervical radiculopathy is sometimes overlooked.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Early evaluation is key. Diagnosis typically includes a physical exam, imaging such as MRI, and sometimes nerve testing. Surgery is considered only when conservative treatment fails or if there is progressive weakness. Most cases respond well to non-surgical treatment, which may include:

  • Activity modification and ergonomic adjustments
  • Physical therapy focused on posture, strength, and mobility
  • Anti-inflammatory medications or targeted injections

Why Early Care Matters in Workers’ Compensation

Prompt diagnosis helps to:

  • Prevent prolonged pain and disability
  • Reduce unnecessary treatments for the wrong body part
  • Shorten the time away from work
  • Support safe, sustainable return-to-work plans

Addressing cervical radiculopathy early benefits both the injured worker and the employer by improving outcomes and controlling claim costs. When arm pain follows a workplace injury, the neck should always be part of the evaluation. Identifying cervical radiculopathy early leads to faster recovery, better function, and healthier employees.
