What is a Fracture?

I am Dr. Ojo, fellowship trained foot & ankle specialist here at OrthoGeorgia. I’m here to talk about ankle fractures. A fracture is a broken bone that can occur anywhere in your body. They are very common in the foot and ankle region. There are different kinds of fractures. We have simple fractures that are clean breaks on the bone to more severe combined fractures, where the bone is broken into multiple pieces.

What are the Causes of Ankle Fractures?

There are various causes of ankle fractures. It could be, you know, something as simple as rolling your ankle in the yard or more severe causes like falling off a ladder or roof, or a motor vehicle accident.

How is an Ankle Fracture Diagnosed and Treated?

Patients will typically present with bruising, pain, and swelling in the ankle and foot. Occasionally they are unable to put pressure on it – depending on if it’s a simple fracture, and in more severe cases, they have trouble just bearing weight on their foot. When I see these patients in the clinic, we get imaging studies to include x-rays and CT scans and MRI, just depending on the fracture and the fracture pattern. The treatment options include a lace-up ankle brace, a walking boot, or a cast. In more severe cases, we discuss surgical options.
